Justice League started in the summer of 1983. To give context, Minor Threat was still together, SS Decontrol had just released “Get It Away” and a group of kids from the skateboard region known as The Badlands, saw America’s Hardcore play live and decided that this was it: we are going to start a band whose message was Straight Edge. Their first show was that winter.
Things moved fast once drivers licenses were obtained. The band started playing different cities, Flipside Fanzine featured two X-ed up songs on their video zine, and lots of shows with that would now be considered classic hardcore bands like Ill Repute, Necros, Cause for Alarm, Die Kreuzen, Agnostic Front, 45 Grave, Agent Orange, DRI, 7 Seconds, Battalion of Saints, and Social Distortion just to name a few.
There were changes happening though. Those bands in DC and Boston were breaking up or going metal. The first West Coast Straight Edge Bands, A.HC. and Stalag 13 had broken up. Gigs shrunk from thousands in the audience to a few hundred at best. Justice League was the band that kept that initial Straight Edge movement going through these times. With a positive message and a youthful approach, the members kept playing until the new breed joined in.
With two years of shows played with that early line-up, Justice League recorded six songs and released their debut EP, “Think or Sink”. This album compiles that record, a pair of compilation tracks, as well as never released live recordings that showcase both the anger and the hopefulness that Justice League had when they wanted to change the world and give the audience an option without drugs. This record is a testament to what kids in high school can do with a lot of motivation and no addictions to life’s vices.
